ANTOINE AUBOIRON

Antoine Auboiron (b. 1990, Paris) graduated from the Beaux-Arts de Paris-Cergy in 2015. His work has been shown in Paris and Shanghai, including at the Fondation Louis Vuitton (2015), Galerie Amac (2019), and most recently in a solo exhibition at Zeto Art (Paris, 2026) and at Westbund Art & Design Shanghai (2025).

In his most recent work, Antoine Auboiron employs a technique close to marquetry, where velvet fabric defines the surface of the piece. Clean, precise contours are filled with pure, unmixed colors, assembled edge to edge across the surface. While the process may appear static, the material introduces a subtle instability: shifting with the angle and ambient light, the velvet alternately reveals or absorbs the pattern. This shift away from oil painting marks a reconfiguration of the pictorial process. The image is no longer built through layers or gesture, but assembled through distinct fields of color and material. Flatness is not asserted as a principle but tested, as the surface responds unevenly to light, producing variations that remain dependent on viewing conditions. The compositions do not aim to describe or narrate. They establish a state. Forms remain deliberately unstable, suspended between abstraction and figuration, clarity and absorption. Nothing is fully resolved. The surface becomes a site of quiet tension, where perception hesitates and meaning remains open, continuously renegotiated by light and movement. The work unfolds slowly, revealing itself through prolonged looking rather than immediate recognition.
